About Purnea Semen Station

Purnea Semen Station, Purnea is a unit of Bihar Livestock Development Agency under Department of Animal Husbandry and Fisheries Resources, Government of Bihar. The foundation stone of Purnea Semen Station (PSS) was laid down by Honourable Chief Minister Shri Nitish Kumar on 12-05-2018 and Inauguration of Purnea Semen Station was done by Honourable Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi through video conferencing on 10-09-2020. Production of Frozen Semen doses started at Purnea Semen Station since 19th February 2021.

The semen station of PSS is “ISO-9001:2015” certified with Certificate No.- IND.21.22236/QM/U Version:1 Revision Date:16 January 2022 expires on 15 January 2025 for “Collection, Processing and Dispatch of Frozen Bovine Semen Doses” by Bureau Veritas (India) Pvt. Ltd. Whereas, the accreditation of PSS by Central Monitoring Unit (CMU) (a committee constituted by DADF, Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Government of India, Krishi Bhawan, New Delhi) is with 'A' Grade CMU certification in the year 2022-23.

Fodder Farm has 55 acres of cultivable land and different fodder crops like Maize, Sorghum, Bajra, Oats, Berseem, Lucerne, Kutchi rajka, Hybrid Napier, Chinese Cabbage, Sugarbeet, Turnip, Carrot etc. were grown to cater to the requirement of good quality roughages of SS herd, round the year. Almost all the operations in Fodder Farm like ploughing, seedbed preparation, seed sowing, fertilizer broadcasting, inter-cultivation, harvesting and chopping of green forage are mechanised. Whereas, fodder crops irrigation is done with sprinklers. PSS has its own Cattle Feed Mill plant to produce quality feed based on feed formulation. Breeding bulls feeding is also based on the TMR basis (DeLaval TMR feed mix wagon) to provide proper nutrition.

Farmers are benefited by PSS to increase income through better milk production of animals through genetic improvement of their progeny born. PSS also provides advisory services to farmers for better conception rate, rearing of progenies and improved animal management. For prevention of disease incidence in the farm and surrounding areas, a Ring Vaccinations Programme is conducted in all cloven footed animals at the villages located in a 10 Km radius of semen station as well as quarantine station. This programme has enabled us to prevent outbreaks of infectious disease like FMD in the surrounding villages. This prevents risk of disease outbreaks at the farm.

Purnea Semen Station provides eco-friendly environment at its surroundings by the following activates:

To be self-sufficient in electric energy production through solar system fitted on the bull sheds roof with a capacity of 200.6 kWp and it generates approx. 850 kWh per day in the peak time.
To prevent soil erosion and reduce pollution as comparatively cooling surrounding temperature, 6500 trees planted along plenty of grass lawns. Trees near-by boundary wall will also act as alternative of disease causing agents barrier.
Maintaining rain water harvesting system through two ponds of 2.5 acre and 1 acre capacity for recharging the ground water level.
Dung slurry and washings used for crop irrigation through slurry storage tanks.
Dung disposal as per standard biosecurity procedures.
Improve soil water retention through adding Vermi compost and other organic wastages.
Biomedical wastage disposal by outsourced agency Synergy Waste Management (P) Ltd.
